The 54th Massachusetts Regiment, the first African-American regiment to serve during the Civil War, included 20 men who enlisted in Rutland, Vt., to join the regiment, and fight for their country.
We'll unveil a new sculpture by local artist Don Ramey, funded by Rutland Regional Medical Center, the fifth piece on the planned Rutland Sculpture Trail. It will honor the local enlistees, and all African-American Vermonters who served in the regiment. The unveiling is on Center Street, near the southwest corner of Merchants Row.
