Three Rutland Regional Medical Center Nurses Awarded the Carol P. Welsh, RN, Nursing Education Scholarship
 
 
 
RUTLAND, VT – Rutland Regional Medical Center's Nursing Excellence Team recently presented the Carol P. Welsh, RN, Nursing Education Scholarship to Andrea Borchlewicz, MSN, RNC-MNN, CLC, RNCOP; Benjamin Mahoney, DNP, APRN, AGPCNP-BC, CARN-AP; and Elizabeth Oshinaike, BSN, RN. Each recipient was presented with their respective award during a surprise visit and presentation by Kelly Watson, Chief Nursing Officer, and Carole “Gert” Mayes, Manager of Nursing Excellence for Rutland Regional, along with other hospital leaders.
 
Carol Welsh was employed by Rutland Regional for 34-years and held numerous positions at the hospital before becoming a long-standing Director of Surgical Services. She passed away on December 30, 2011. Carol was a mentor to many nurses during her long career at Rutland Regional and many still remember her kindness and generosity. The Carol P. Welsh, RN, Nursing Education Scholarship was established in Carol's memory in 2012 by her husband Bruce and their family.
 
Andrea Borchlewicz is an RN clinical educator in the Education & Clinical Excellence Department. Andrea will use her scholarship to attend a certification preparation course. This course will prepare her to pass the Nursing Professional Development certification exam. This certification highlights her commitment to ongoing professional growth and using the latest evidence to support other nurses on their professional development journey. Benjamin Mahoney is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse at the West Ridge Clinic. Ben will use his scholarship to attend an educational conference at the Association for Multidisciplinary Education & Research in Substance Use and Addiction to learn and network with his peers. This conference provides invaluable information on medications and treatments for treating substance addiction and methods for advocating for their clients’ needs. He plans to bring the information to the Rutland community as a way to continue supporting evidence-based care for this population. Photo link Benjamin Mahoney.
 
Elizabeth Oshinaike is an RN staff nurse working on the Psychiatric Services Unit. Elizabeth will use her scholarship to attend the American Psychiatric Nurse Association’s 39th Annual Conference. As an international nurse who relocated to the United States, she is “committed to continuous education and excellence in psychiatric care.” Elizabeth will use the knowledge gained to help her earn certification in psychiatric nursing, so she can use the best evidence possible to “amplify best practices and expand access to quality psychiatric care.” Photo link Elizabeth Oshinaike.

About the Carol P. Welsh, RN, Nursing Education Scholarship: The Carol P. Welsh, RN, Nursing Education Scholarship was established through generous donations in honor of Carol.  The scholarship is awarded annually to any Rutland Regional Medical Center nursing staff pursuing continuing education opportunities including conference registration fees and specialty certification review courses and travel expenses incurred for conferences and courses. Carol Welsh was a 34-year employee of Rutland Regional. She received her RN from Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing in Harrisburg, PA, in 1971 and began her nursing career as an ER nurse at Morristown Memorial Hospital in NJ. Upon moving to Vermont in 1977 with Bruce, her husband, she held numerous positions before becoming a long-standing Director of Surgical Services. Carol proudly earned her BS from Castleton, an MS degree from UVM, and served as a mentor to many nurses during her long career at Rutland Regional – all while raising her young family. Carol passed away on December 30,2011.
