RUTLAND, VT — In June, members of the volunteer Rutland Area Medical Community Scholarship Committee awarded six scholarships to local students pursuing a career in healthcare. Since the inception of the Rutland Area Medical Community Scholarship program in 2016, the volunteer committee of providers has awarded more than $125,000 in scholarships to 58 local students. The scholarship program has been made possible through the generosity of Rutland area physicians, retired physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
Now in its tenth year, the scholarship program received an overwhelming response from a wide variety of qualified candidates across the region this past spring, with 43 applicants. The Rutland Area Medical Community scholarship awards are aimed at creating opportunities that empower recipients to achieve excellence as they pursue an education in the healthcare field. Eligible candidates include high school seniors, local college students, and Rutland area medical community employees who are working toward furthering their goal of a career in healthcare.
This year’s recipients include graduating high school senior, Emily Porchesa, Rutland High School, who will attend the University of Vermont School of Nursing. Other recipients include current RRMC employees and college students Shannon Adams, RRMC VOC Medical Assistant attending Vermont State University BSN program; Amy Harmon, RRMC Nurse Residency Program Coordinator attending University of Vermont NP program; Melissa McLeod, RRMC Pediatric RN Case Manager attending Western Governors University BSN program; Zachary Razanouski, RRMC ED Technician attending SUNY Adirondack School of Nursing; and Maeve Sheehe, RRMC VOC Medical Assistant who will attend Franklin Pierce PA program.
“After a decade, we continue to have an outstanding pool of applicants,” said Dr. Stanley Shapiro, Co-Chair of the Rutland Area Medical Community Scholarship Committee. “Each application brought a great deal of pride to every member on the review committee. We are proud as a Rutland area medical community to be able to offer the scholarship to students in our local region.”
